Hummus

Today I want to share my homemade hummus recipe.  For those of you who might not know what it is, Hummus is a dip made out of chickpeas.  It originates from the middle east and it’s usually served as a starter, along with pita bread.

I usually use it as a dip for my salads or as a replacement for mayonnaise since it’s a healthy.  It goes in my tortillas wraps, sandwiches, burgers, snacks and so on.  It’s easy to prepare as you literally toss everything in your blender or food processor and you’re done!  You can’t go wrong with this dip!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Boiled Chickpeas / Canned Chickpeas
  • 1 or 2 Garlic cloves
  • 1 green chili
  • 1 squeeze of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 chopped Onion
  • 2 teaspoons of sesame seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon of mustard

Preparation:

  1. Toast your sesame seeds in a pan over a low flame.  Keep a vigilant eye on them because these little meanies burn real fast…anyways, that should take you about roughly 2 minutes.
  2. Add the chickpeas to your blender.  If you have boiled chickpeas, you can also add a tablespoon of the water it has boiled in.  Add the garlic cloves, mustard, chili, sesame seeds and onion.  Add a little bit of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  3. Add a pinch of salt and pulse again.  Taste the mixture and season according to your preference.  You may want to add another squeeze of lemon juice or more salt.
  4. Pour into a jar and store in your fridge.  It will last for around a week.

If  you can lay your hands on limon Rodrigues (lemons from Rodrigues) you will end up with the yummiest hummus ever!
