We tried…Mr Berti Lasagne
A few days ago, I was working from home. It was unplanned and as lunchtime neared, I wasn’t sure what to eat.
I was craving something hearty and suddenly remembered that I had the frozen lasagne from Mr Berti sitting in the freezer for one of those lazy days when you’re not feeling like cooking but still want comfort food.
For your information, Mr Berti is a local brand that offers artisanal frozen lasagna. Made in Mauritius, these lasagnas are cooked over a wood fire, the pasta is home made and the ingredients are fresh.
I got this box at Quartier des Serres when they held Le Marché des Producteurs Locaux. I know that it’s a delicious meal as I had ‘la vegetalienne’ lasagne the fair (note that it’s not fully veg, there’s eggs in it). But this time, I was making it myself and I’m trying la fermière which has chicken and mushrooms.
The instructions are printed on the box and ate simple. I preheated my oven at 180°C, once it was ready, I opened the box, cut the plastic in which the lasagne was wrapped in and put the tray in the oven, setting the timer for 40 minutes.
10 minutes later… I’m typing away on my laptop and there’s a wonderful aroma emerging from my kitchen… I’m a bit distracted 😅… it smells like homemade lasagne.
Another 15 minutes go by… Ok! I am officially hungry! Grr! Imagine the torture! Gee! Thanks, Mr Berti!ðŸ˜
If I were a cat, I would probably be pancing in front of that oven like a predator, ready to pounce on my meal the moment it came out…
Somehow I manage to focus on my screen and type away.
The timer suddenly goes off! Time for the verdict but first… a photo for you guys.
Ok time to dig in. Luckily I have some leftover salad from the day before to have with this.
Here’s my verdict:
I wasn’t disappointed at all with this lasagne. It’s comfort food, perfect for a rainy day. The flavours were really very balanced and it didn’t feel like I was eating a premade frozen meal. That was restaurant quality!
In fact, the mushrooms and chicken were cooked to perfection, the cheese was melted just fine, the béchamel sauce was nice, rich and creamy. The lasagne sheets were definitely homemade. There were those smoky notes that came through, reminding of a meal cooked by wood fire.
Personally, I feel that this portion can feed 1 person who is really starving(like I was) easily. If you’re not too hungry, half of it will be fine.
A delicious salad pairs well with this meal and if you like your food spicy, a little bit of chilli sauce or (in my case) homemade mazavaroo is a nice touch.
Mr Berti really delivers on its promises with this lasagne. It’s easy to cook, it’s delicious, flavoursome and fresh. This is comfort food!
Will I be having it again? Definitely!
es lasagnes. C’est facile à cuisiner, c’est délicieux, savoureux et frais. C’est un plat réconfortant !Â
Est-ce que je vais en racheter? Certes !
