Golden Milk
Golden Milk
Once in a while I would hear something like, “li malad? Donne li dilait safran!” (he’s sick? Give him golden milk!). I would even see it on TV. Whenever you’re watching one of these indian movies or shows and someone gets injured or falls sick, an elderly person will be telling them to make golden milk/ turmeric milk.
As curious as I am, I wanted to know more. There must be some reason behind this. I read a lot about it and now, especially during winter, I will make myself a mug of golden milk as I understand the health benefits. Before I go deeper into how and why, let’s find out more about what it is Golden Milk.
This traditional beverage originates from India and to put it in simple words, it is milk infused with turmeric and has been used to treat coughs, inflammations, injuries, etc. It is a well-known remedy in Ayurveda.
Turmeric, by itself, has a bitter taste and by infusing milk with it, along with other ingredients such as cardamon, pepper and a little bit of sugar, the bitter taste goes away.
Turmeric Milk is also known as Golden Milk due to the colour of the beverage. Indeed, the turmeric gives the milk a gold/yellow colour.
Some benefits of Golden Milk
Turmeric, one of the key ingredients in Golden Milk, is rich in antioxidants that protect the body from different diseases and infections. Scientific studies have also found that turmeric contains curcumin which may contain antidepressant, anti inflammatory, antifungal and anti cancerous properties.
Milk is a rich source of calcium and vitamin D which helps to strengthen our bones.
What do you think? Do you think you’ll consider incorporating Golden Milk in your diet?
Now let me tell you a bit about my experience with it so far.
How do I feel after having taken Golden Milk for a while?
I have noticed a few changes in my body since I have started taking Golden Milk. I started taking it around April this year when the weather started to change from summer towinter. Usually during these times I can end up with a cold or a fever. I did end up with a fever around May but it was mild and it did not bother me at all. Except for a rise in temperature, I was able to work normally and did not even have a headache. If I did end up with a cold, it would stop within 2 days. I’m not sure if it could be the Golden Milk but that’s the new thing that I just incorporated in my diet. Other than that I have been eating the same way.
Here’s how I prepare my turmeric milk. You’ll see that it is very easy and doesn’t take much time. Try it and let me know how you like it. If you decide to try it for some time or you already know about it, share your experience with me. I’d love to hear about it. Afterall, all experiences matter 🙂
